R-410a is an air conditioning refrigerant that was originally developed and patented by Allied Signal (now Honeywell). It was designed as an environmentally friendly refrigerant to be used as a replacement for R-22 (commonly known as Freon®). After its introduction, R-410a was marketed extensively by the Carrier Corporation under the trade name Puron®. Effective January 1, 2010, central air conditioning units that used R-22 were prohibited from manufacture in the United States by Federal law. This left units manufactured using R-410a as the only practical alternative.
